Noah Moore
Director & Funky Diabetic

Noah Moore has been a Type-1 diabetic since the age of 16, and a clown for much longer. Assimilating all skills, no matter how seemingly-useless, has been the guiding principle of his life.

Noah spent many years advocating for the diabetes community before launching the first phase of this project in 2004: Noah’s Voyage. The 11-month sojourn in South America tied together adventure travel, foreign diabetes organizations, diabetes magazines, street performing, and the formation of his and his brother’s performance duo, Instruments of the Now. Noah and Zan’s plan, with no timeline, was to enact the type of motivational circus theater show that could inspire any audience (the type they just finished touring around this year).
After flying home to accept the Diabetes Exercise & Sports Association’s 2005 Athletic Achievement Award, Noah began the next major phase of the project in China and Hong Kong. The 6 months in the East revolved around circus schools, martial arts, children’s hospitals, orphanages, dispersing free juggling props, and bridging language and cultural barriers with performance art.

Noah’s long history of working with children paved the way for 2007’s tour to diabetes camps across the Western U.S. This first year of Tour Now & Then was meant to be an opus and final gift to the diabetes community that had shared so much with him. However, the project’s one-of-a-kind programs had a different idea about when they would retire…

There you have it. Now that Noah is in a nutshell, feel free to crack it open for a better look at the adventures that inspired 2008’s tour…

Jeff Calafato
Performance & Visual Artist

“Art…a communication in pursuit of meaning. A ritual devised to connect to a higher sense of self? With so much energy driving me to create, I would like to think I create art to offer a doorway leading towards self-awareness; art has become my obsessive-compulsive mantra. My art is very much like a yogi’s OM; I feel I have a responsibility to practice my art for the betterment of my self. The art I construct engages me to be in myself in the past, present and future. My fulfillment arises from recognizing my mission of helping others realize their potential and from exerting myself to make it a reality!” -Jeff Calafato

Jeff Calafato has a strong and diverse background in the arts. At university, his professors and fellow peers called him an “Art Bomb”. Because of his talents, Jeff excelled in many diverse art disciplines. He has displayed works of art in many galleries and graduated with honors. Jeff Calafato holds a BFA in Art and Multimedia Studies with an emphasis in the performing arts and alternative mixed media photographic processing. Jeff Calafato is an accomplished graphic designer working in photography, film, animation, illustration, web design, publishing, and commercial printing industries.

Ryan Reeves
Musical Director & Sound Scientist

Ryan was born March 22, 1983 in an industrial-size hospital in Northern California. Doctors report he emerged into this world blue as a robin’s egg and cooing at the morning sun. His naturally imbued sense of rhythm was the by-product of riding in the womb of a tireless Jazzercize instructor and an early childhood affliction involving grunge music, 60’s psychedelic music and a Kriss Kross tape. Ryan’s performing roles with more than a dozen bands up, down, and beyond the Pacific Coast are part of a larger course set true through an undeterred mission to discover a new harmony to the love song Earth. Ryan’s experiences empowering youth span numerous years at programs of the YMCA, Sacred Heart Hospital, and the Courageous Kids organization.

Aurora
Artistic Director & Prop Elf

Aurora has been directing activities with kids since 2001. She has worked with language village camps, summer camps, ropes courses, and wilderness therapy programs. She entered the world of fire dancing in 2002 and began performing with her brother in 2004, realizing the effectiveness of fire as a microphone. Their presentations were based on interacting with the audience and inspiring participants to realize and share their talents with the world. Aurora has subsequently helped orchestrate festivals, facilitated school programs, and spent countless hours interacting with unsuspecting strangers to spread a little light.

From her myriad of essential skills, Aurora’s handy-work sewing costumes, constructing props, and building the set, is just a smattering of her contributions to the tour. A local celebrity in her hometown of a whopping 300 people, she’s entered the big life as an overall clown of many traits. Now her parents are waiting to hear that she is running away from the circus.
